For many centuries tourists have been drawn to this area. Still today it is one of the chief Swiss destinations for hiking.
One of the trail lodges made it onto the cover of the National Geographic's book "Destinations of a Lifetime". However, there are many other sights along the route, such as the Wildkirchli Caves with a hermitage and chapel.
The mountain views from lake Seealpsee are unique. The tectonic folds have essentially formed three ridges that shifted against each other. The mountain range is rather steep and the valleys are deeply incised. The Alpstein is an ideal, partly demanding hiking area.
