For the most part, the Altiplano is located in the Bolivian Andes - It is one of the most extensive areas of high plateau on Earth.
In the center of the salt flat, the Incahuasi island is a rocky outcrop of land featuring gigantic cacti.
The best way to explore the Southern part of the Altiplano is by taking a jeep or any other 4WD from Atacama (Chile) to Uyuni (Bolivia) - either direction is fine.
The road does feature scenic spots, such as the Laguna Colorado, Laguna Verde and many other salt lakes, home of the Andean flamingos.
Other notable mentions are the colorful Dali and Siloli deserts. Both are characterized by landscapes resembling the surrealist paintings by Salvador Dali.
